The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
