The Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Job That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a travel partner. Because my companion was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I did, and I told him that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I should apply for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but straight off explained to my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for three years. A perk of the job was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to reach out at an elite institution and seek a position. Moreover, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a job in Zurich where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
