The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.
